Welcome back to the Lost Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, 'Something Nice Back Home', may not have had too many island based mysteries, but it took leaps and bounds in terms of joining what we know of Jack in the future to his present state. Sports results, a proposal, cryptic messages from beyond the grave and a ship fast enough for you, old man...
For close to a year now, we've wondered how Jack came to the drugged-out decrepit stage we witnessed in season three's finale and with this episode, we watched Jack begin his descent into madness. Let's take a look:
We now know why Jack thought his father was upstairs; as far as Jack is concerned, Christian is back around for good. Hurley shared the fact they he'd stopped taking his meds in order to compune with Charlie easier, and that he now saw him most of the time. Jack may be self-medicating, but we've seen in the future that it doesn't solve his problems at all. In fact, Jack and Hurley now share another strong link - Jack request Dr Stevenson, his co-worker, write him a script for clonazepam, the very same medication Hurley took to stop seeing Dave.
And did you notice that the smoke alarm went off moments before Jack saw him? That seems suspicious... could Christian actually be an off-island Smokey appearance?
We now know why Jack and Kate's relationship is so fractured; Jack's trust issues, daddy issues and savior complex all came into play. Notice he didn't ask Kate to marry him until she had assured him he was a good father; once again, the gesture was more about himself than her. Not a day later, he was already suspecting her of cheating on him and, due to his rampant trust issues, he simply couldn't let it go, seemingly forever dooming their relationship. Not only does his outrage confirm that the story gave in court was a blatant lie, he also reveals that he probably knows Aaron is his nephew when he tells Kate that "You're not even related!" Will this play into Hurley's ominous warning that Jack isn't supposed to raise him?
The most interesting part of their fight is the fact that she was doing something Sawyer, who apparently chose to stay behind, had made her promise to. Considering the heroic growth we've witnessed Sawyer go through lately, is it much of a stretch that he asked her to check in on Clementine, the baby he (supposedly) fathered with Kate's conning buddy Cassidy?
Back on the island, we witnessed several interesting new developments with both Claire and Miles. Its been a while since we've seen Miles use his ghostbusting powers, but they were in full force this episode, discovering the grisly bodies of Karl and Rousseau while taking a particular interest in Claire and Aaron. The revelation was shocking that he too had seen Christian, however, it begs the question - if Christian is dead yet walking around, does Miles perceive him to actually be alive?
Finally, the key line of the episode belonged to Claire - "At least I'm not seeing things anymore." If only we'd seen what she'd been seeing, her disappearance with Christian into the jungle would've made a lot more sense... The question this leaves us with now is, considering how important we've been told it is that Claire raise Aaron, could his removal from the island be the true purpose behind Jack's desperate need to return?
