Welcome back to the LOST Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, "Eggtown", slapped us in the face with the shocking final reveal of who Kate had to rush home to during last season finale, as well as (seemingly) putting to bed Kate's man decision once-and-for-all. An extorting offer, a missing chopper, yet another con, a lost leader and a set of playing cards...
We'll start with what your mind is still spinning out over - the big reveal that Kate not only has a son off-island, but that the young boy is none other than Claire's son Aaron! Something must have happened to Claire for Kate to have taken custody of Aaron - something very, very bad. This brings up so many interesting possibilities of what could've led to these events, but the key moment seems to be when Kate asked Jack to come and visit her home and he swiftly rejected the offer. Jack was fine to meet somewhere for coffee, but the thought of seeing Aaron was clearly too much for him. We know that he and Claire are half-siblings; could they learn this shortly before tragedy befalls Claire? The memories brought back by visiting his nephew could be too much to handle... especially if Jack somehow played a hand in whatever befalls our favourite Aussie mum.
How did the Oceanic Six explain Kate and Aaron's relationship to the world? She was known not to be pregnant when she boarded the plane, and it is highly unlikely the courts would be prepared to allow an adopted child to remain with someone on trial for murder, yet her mother truly believed Aaron to be her grandson. Could the lie be that Aaron is his son with Kate but they have since seperated? This idea is certainly supported by Jack's statement that he no longer loves her and his private retraction of it later, and you can't debate how much better it would make her look before a jury...
Whatever the full lie is, I never would've taken Jack for an actor, but he sold the story of Kate's heroism to the court like a pro. Lying under oath? This is clearly not the Jack we know, yet this seems to be long before he goes off the deep end. He still seems to be content maintaining "the lie", especially if it protects Kate. Leaving the island seems to have changed everyone dramatically - Kate wants nothing more than to stay put. By the end of 'Eggtown', we could see that Kate seems to have chosen Jack after all, spurning Sawyer after his, well, stupid behaviour and reaction to her non-pregnancy news on-island. What will cause Jack to go off the deep end so badly and, just as importantly, cause the rift in the relationship between Kate and Jack?
Jumping back to the action on-island, Locke's descent into desperation seems to be in full-swing, so much so that it felt like we were dealing with disillusioned and confused season two Locke all over again. Ben knows exactly how to twist his screws and, now that he is unable to find Jacob's cabin again, he seems at wits end. Did you spot the book he brought Ben to read over breakfast? It was a copy of Philip K. Dick's VALIS, short for 'Vast Active Living Intelligence System', which revolves around God being revealed as a creature projected into our minds by an alien satellite to control humans. Heady stuff... a lot like Karl's Room 23 perhaps?
Another episode, another con and more wool pulled over Locke's eyes, this time by Sawyer and Kate. How Locke didn't make the connection between them is surprising, but he has more important issues on his mind. The fact that they pulled it off was most impressive, yet left us scratching our heads... Miles' conversation with Ben raised several interesting questions, the most important being why .2 million dollars exactly? It was a very specific amount to ask for, and Miles truly believes that Ben has access to that sort of money. Sayid's discovery of Ben's secret room last episode certainly supports his belief. Could Miles really be so greedy he'd sell out the mission for money? Or could he have actually been talking in code because he is Ben's man on the boat?
We didn't spend long at the main camp this episode, but the short time we did have left us with two big questions, the first being: where is the chopper? Considering the freighter is supposedly only 80 miles offshore, the trip should've taken twenty minutes, yet the chopper hasn't been in contact in over a day. Could Frank be Ben's man on the boat, taking Sayid and Desmond to a different, safer location? Has there been a mutiny on the ship, with Regina, the woman on the phone, lying about their new captives? Or could it have something to do with the time differential Faraday discovered last week?
Speaking of Faraday leads us to the biggest mystery of the episode - why was Charlotte testing Daniel with the Dharma playing cards? Could he posses some sort of psychic ability and she is testing him with unseen cards? Does Daniel have memory issues that he believes the island could counter-act, explaining why Charlotte said he was making progress? The fact that one of his cards can be seen in Aaron's bedroom in the future presents another theory - like Desmond, could Faraday possess some sort of power allowing him to see the future?
