Watch Ep 306's Secret Clue on Video
Welcome back to the Lost Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, 'I Do', saw many elements of the story take a huge leap forward, as well as several subtle clues and hints to fuel our theories. Kate's persistent need to run was explained in flashback, Locke received what he believes are further instructions for his mission, Alex further involved herself in our Losties' lives, Jack made an important decision about his future and we heard mention of a mysterious new character who may or may not be the man behind it all.
In flashback, we saw Kate's big wedding day, a moment we've been hoping to see since way back in season one when she and Sawyer played a drunken game of I Never. While there were no major clues hidden in the flashbacks, they did go a long way to explain Kate's motivations and actions on the island, as well as reinforcing the similarities between her and Sun. Throughout the flashback, we saw Kate struggle with the notion of settling down once and for all, not helped by the fact she married a police officer, Kevin, who specialised in tracking down fugitives. As the Marshall was quick to point out, as much as Kate longs to stay put, they "both know that'll never happen," and after Kevin surprises her with overseas Honeymoon tickets, she accepts that fact and bolts. Before she did though, she drugged Kevin and confessed to her deception. It was in this scene that the link between her and Sun was so firmly established – a spurned lover grasping tightly to a necklace symbolising their love, as well as their fondness for using drugs to achieve their goals...
Not much time was spent with our main beach Losties this week, but the few moments that were revealed a message seemingly from the heavens. While burying Eko and delivering an eulogy, Locke noticed that that the sunlight was hitting Eko's Jesus stick in an odd manner, particularly highlighting the phrase 'Lift Up Your Eyes And Look North' and the passage listing of 'JOHN 3:05'. Considering how seriously Locke takes anything he considers a sign from the island, could this be a large clue as to our favourite wilderness warrior's next moves?
Ever since Claire, Kate and Rousseau journeyed to the Staff medical hatch in season two, we've slowly learnt more about the young girl, Alex, living with the Others, seemingly rebelling at every opportunity. Alex played a key role in this week's episode, involving herself in rescue attempts for all three captives as well as having a possible link to an Others power-player. She broke into the quarry where Kate and Sawyer were being forced to work and attempted to liberate the two, armed only with a slingshot, and even though she was heavily outgunned, she had no intention of going quietly. As she was dragged away, she cried to Kate not to believe them – they will kill Kate's love, just as they killed her boyfriend. Could her boyfriend be Karl, the young man kept across from Sawyer?
Alex also involved herself in Jack's escape by using the supposedly broken intercom to communicate with him. Lost in a world of despair, Jack overheard a female's voice tell him to "try it, the door..." and sure enough the door was unlocked. The vocal pattern was identical to Alex's, which leaves us with the question – why is this young lady so intent on busting out prisoners her people are so intent on keeping? And, just as importantly, why was Ben asking if Alex had asked after him before heading into surgery? Could there be a connection we're not aware of yet?
But the two most important moments of this episode were so subtle, so brief and so quietly spoken that you'll be forgiven for not having caught them. The first was the muffled conversation had between Juliet and Danny Pickett in the Others' quarry, where Juliet explained that "the schedule has been moved up two weeks", an idea he finds "stupid", to which she replies "they called, it's just the way it is, Danny..." With this one brief conversation, we received confirmation that Ben is not the man running the show - while he may be in charge of the Others-related action we've seen so far, he's not calling all the shots.
And before you can say to yourself, "Well, if Ben's not in charge, who is?", Pickett let another nugget of truth slip – that "Shephard wasn't even on Jacob's list..." Not only is Ben not the top man in the Others' camp – that looks to be the mysterious Jacob aka Him - but the list of people given to Michael to retrieve didn't come from the top. The Others façade of being a unified force is slowly cracking, as it seems there may some opposing objectives on their minds...
