Episode 315 - "Left Behind" Secret Clue

Welcome back to the Lost Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, 'Left Behind', offered up some fantastic new clues, mysteries and a few answers, but the focus was all on the mysterious smoke monster.

Once Jack, Sayid, Kate and Juliet are united at the Others' Barracks, Sayid comments that "It's like fifty people disappeared into thin air" in regards to their total disappearance without leaving any tracks. This is not the first time the Others' lack of a trail has been noticed; Mr Eko and Ana-Lucia had both noticed this during the period that the Others were attacking the Tailies. The title of the episode is an interesting nod to the Bible, referring to The Rapture, or the moment when Christians will ascend to meet Christ. On several occasions, the Others have referred to themselves as "the good guys" – could the Others believe that they are worthy, unlike Juliet, and have moved on to pursue this goal?

This episode, we finally learnt the true purpose behind the sonic barrier – it exists to keep the smoke monster out of the Barracks. Juliet showed that not only is the fence still operating, but that the Others have an access code (15-16-23) so they may come and go as they please and that it is amazingly effective at stopping the monster. The mystery remains, however – why couldn't a creature seemingly made of smoke simply fly over?

The answer appears to have been given last season, hidden amongst the clue-filled blast door map seen by Locke during the Swan hatch lockdown - Mus uni non fidit antro – which is Latin for "a mouse does not rely on just one hole." During the first season finale, Locke was grabbed by a smoke plume and dragged towards a man-made hole in the ground, only defeated by Kate tossing dynamite in after it. Could the smoke monster actually be tied to the island itself, using these vents to travel around the island?

Lending credence to this theory, and also assisting us in finally being able to give the smoke monster a name, is the fact that, when the monster attacked Juliet at the sonic barrier, it came from three different directions to form a single entity. Shown on the blast door map are C.V. locations, as well as several mentions of something known as Cerberus. Cerberus was the three-headed black dog that guarded the gates to hell, keeping souls in and out accordingly. Could the smoke monster be a form of Cerberus, created by Dharma as another fate-altering security system experiment, now loose and doing damage utilizing an underground network of tunnels and Cerberus Vents?

Furthermore, now that we know the smoke monster consists of parts, rather than a single whole, we can attribute certain actions to particular parts. If it truly is a representation of Cerberus on earth, it could very well serve as the judge, jury and executioner for the island itself. Both Eko and Juliet were studied by this first element, which seemed to be collecting information on them through the flashes. Eko held confession with his brother not long before he was killed, and "Yemi's" verdict was issued then and there. Finally, Eko was brutally killed by the full, combined smoke monster itself. Has the smoke monster become a representation of the moral voice of the island?
