Watch Ep 318's Secret Clue on Video
Welcome back to the Lost Secret Clue, where we dig deeper to find the clues and secrets you might've missed to fuel your theories! This week's episode, 'D.O.C.', gave us some fantastic answers while also presenting us with an earth-shattering revelation to do with the survivors of 815.
Given that the episode was named D.O.C., or Date Of Conception, it was hardly surprising that we learnt a great deal about the parentage of Sun's baby. After learning from Juliet how all pregnant women on the island have died, she and Sun travel to The Staff medical hatch where Juliet reveals the secret store room where the hatch's equipment was stored. When asked by Sun what the room was used for, Juliet bluntly replies that "This is where we brought the women to die", having lost nine women over the course of three years, with none making it to their third trimester.
While the news that Jin is the father is certainly great news for Sun, meaning her infidelity may well live on unknown, it also spells her doom. Everything seemed to point to Jae Lee being the father and, if this was the case, everything could have proceeded without concern, however, with the baby being conceived 53 days earlier, Jin is most certainly the father. Sun pointed out that Jin was infertile before coming to the island, but Juliet counters that men on the island have their sperm count increased fivefold. As we later found out, Sun was not the only woman Juliet was sent to investigate - could Kate and Sawyer's newfound relationship have already sealed her fate?
The one-eyed Russian menace Mikhail returned (seemingly) from the dead this episode, having somehow survived his encounter with the sonic fence. He was summoned to Hurley, Charlie, Jin, Desmond and the injured parachutist after Hurley accidentally set off a flare, and his former position as a field medic proved invaluable as he treated her punctured lung. Mikhail seems to be acutely aware of the healing properties possessed by the island; when Charlie scoffs at his announcement that her injury should be healed in a day, he nonchalantly corrects himself to a day and a half. Considering the last time we saw him he had blood spurting from his ears before dropping dead, perhaps the Losties should listen to his advice...
We also learned that Mikhail is quite the linguist, being able to understand what the parachutist was mumbling, though not actually passing this information on. At various points, she muttered "What happened?" in Mandarin, "I'm dying" in Spanish and Italian, and "Eu não estou só" in Portuguese. Mikhail told the group that she had said thank you for saving her, when in reality, she had shared what could be a chilling warning - "I am not alone..."
There were some interesting background clues that emerged during the flashback. Jin sports a coat with Sun's father's company logo on it, Paik Heavy Industries, a company that should be familiar to anyone who followed last year's Lost Experience. When Sun goes to visit her father at work, she interrupts a conversation he was having with some employees. This conversation should have sent alarm bells ringing, as it was the only Korean spoken in the episode not subtitled. Translated, it reveals that Mr Paik is upset as they have not provided the forged shipping papers to The Hanso Foundation as promised, and that they must get them soon or that their friends will become very angry. Could this be linked to the Helgus Antonius, the container/hospital ship used by The Hanso Foundation?
Finally, of course, was the parachutist's massive reveal - as far as the outside world knows, all the members of 815 are dead. "They found the plane. There were no survivors - they were all dead..." Knowing that she hadn't come to rescue the 815ers but rather Desmond, and that she isn’t alone, leads to three questions. Why is she on the island, who is she with and - most importantly - who does she work for?
