Australia Post warning for Black Friday deliveries

If you’re waiting for your Black Friday and Cyber Monday purchases to arrive in the mail, watch out for parcel-delivery scams, Australia Post has warned.

Australia Post said it was aware of fraudulent text messages from scammers impersonating the postal service. The messages pretend to update customers about the status of their packages and ask them to click a link to update their information.

“These scam messages are sent using ‘AusPost’ sender ID and, due to the way smart phones group these communications, the scam text would appear together with the legitimate thread of Australia Post messages,” Australia Post said.

This is known as a spoofing attack, where scammers copy Australia Post’s information to try to trick customers.

One fake text message reads: “We couldn’t contact you regarding your order, please update your information” and directs customers to click a link.

“Once clicked, the link will lead to [a] fake Australia Post website which is designed to steal your personal and financial information,” Australia Post said.

Australia Post urged Aussies to look out for non-Australia Post web addresses, as well as messages with an unusual sense of urgency.

Australia Post said it would never call, text or email you asking for your information, including your password, credit card details or account information.

It encouraged Aussies to use the official AusPost app and have in-app notifications enabled.

Bumper Black Friday sales

The Australian Retail Association predicted Aussies would spend $6.2 billion over the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, an increase of $200 million from 2021.

Australia Post is set to deliver millions of packages. Last year, the postal service delivered 52 million parcels between the Black Friday sales and Christmas Day.

In the lead-up to Christmas, Australia Post has started offering weekend delivery in all metro capitals and some regional cities.
