Centrelink payment change warning for millions of Aussies: 'May pay early'

Centrelink offices will be closed on the Anzac Day public holiday on Thursday, April 25.

Centrelink recipients are being reminded of upcoming changes to their payment and reporting dates. Offices will be closed for Anzac Day and so will most call centres.

Recipients can still use online services and phone self-service on Thursday, April 25, but are being warned to consider if they are paid early, they will have a longer period than usual before their next payment.

“We want to help you plan so you still get paid. You may need to report your income early so we can pay you during these closures. We may pay you early,” Services Australia said.

These changes will impact a number of Centrelink recipients, including those on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and Austudy, as well as the age pension, carer allowance, disability support pension and parenting payment.

Your Centrelink online account will show your new reporting date for the Anzac Day period. You can also look at the Services Australia website to see the changes.

“When you report early, you’ll need to include what you expect to be paid for that reporting period,” Services Australia said.

“You must also do this for any other changes that may affect your payment. If you make a mistake, you can correct your report within 14 days, or when you next report.”

You can still report your income online, even when Centrelink is closed. If you do this on a public holiday, Services Australia says you’ll be paid after the holiday.

If you don’t have to report to get your payment, Services Australia may pay you early.

“We won’t delay payments because of a public holiday, but we may pay you earlier than normal,” Services Australia said.

This is your normal payment, just sent earlier. It should drop the closest date before your normal payment date so there is not a delay.

However, you should be aware this will make the next period until your payment date a bit longer.
