The nation’s leading cybersecurity agency has called on all Australians to update their Google Chrome browser to patch up a security flaw that could leave devices vulnerable.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre issued an alert on Monday afternoon, labelling the alert as “high” status.

“This update addresses vulnerabilities that an attacker could exploit to take control of an unpatched system,” the ASCS said.

The vulnerabilities are called “CVE-2021-30551” and “CVE-2021-30554”.

Google confirmed that the flaw was something known as a ‘zero-day exploit’, meaning hackers know about the flaw and are actively trying to exploit it, according to Forbes.

So it’s all the more important that you update your Google Chrome browser version, to protect yourself against this.

“ACSC encourages users and administrators to review the Chrome Release Note and apply the necessary updates,” the ASCS said.

If your version of Google Chrome is 91.0.4472.114 or later, you’re safe from this threat.

Google Chrome is by far the most-used internet browser in the world, with an estimated 2.65 billion users.

How to update Google Chrome

If your version of Chrome needs updating, your browser window will reflect this, and say “Update” in the top right corner next to the three dots.

But you can also open Google Chrome, click “More” at the top right corner and hit “Update Google Chrome.

If you’re on an Android device, head to the Play Store app and update the Chrome app.
