Who should replace MasterChef’s three judges? Twitter in overdrive

Three of the hottest jobs in food television are up for grabs following the shock departure of Gary Mehigan, Matt Preston and George Calombaris from MasterChef Australia.

Network 10 announced the three would leave the show on Tuesday afternoon, citing an inability to reach a commercial agreement that was “satisfactory” to the three judges. It’s since been reported that the three had asked for a
40 per cent pay increase.

The departure also comes as Calombaris grapples with a wage scandal, with the chef accused of underpaying some 515 staff a total of $7.83 million. Calombaris lost his endorsement deal with WA Tourism on Monday.

For many MasterChef fans, the question now turns to who will score the three gigs, and if Twitter has its way, there are a number of obvious options.

At time of writing, both Maggie Beer and Kylie Kwong were trending on Twitter.

“Does this mean we can get Adam Liaw, Poh Ling Yeow and Maggie Beer to be the new judges now?” asked writer Sinead Stubbins.

“Okay, my MasterChef dream judging panel is Adam Liaw, Poh Ling Yeoh and Maggie Beer. HOW WHOLESOME WOULD THAT BE?” another Twitter user added.

“Loveable - check. TV hosting experience - check. Not grubby wage thieves - check.”

Fellow writer Maeve Marsden backed her up, although suggested Kylie Kwong in place of Adam Liaw.

“This is excellent news. I vote for Poh Ling Yeow, Kylie Kwong and Maggie Beer.”

Another Twitter user suggested MasterChef use this as an opportunity to promote Australia’s Indigenous chefs.

“Ah the irony. A wage fraudster spitting his dummy about not getting “what he deserves,” I propose Kylie Kwong, Maggie Beer and some up and coming Indigenous Australian Chef?”

“I know the carcasses are still warm (sitting on the pass) but can Kylie Kwong be one of the new judges please?” said another.

Adam Liaw took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to tell followers that he hasn’t heard anything about being a MasterChef judge beyond what’s published online.

“I’ve had about 30 different interview requests in the past half hour about the MasterChef judges leaving, so to save trouble: 1. I know nothing about this beyond what’s online; and 2. I am at the pool with my kids so I am unlikely to agree to an interview in my smugglers,” the former MasterChef winner said.
