Aldi beats Coles, Woolies to win fourth supermarket award

When it comes to an Aussie summer, there’s nothing quite like a cook-up on the barbecue.

So where’s the best place to stock up on steaks, sausages, seafood and roasts, all without breaking the bank?

Well, according to Canstar Blue's latest supermarket survey, Aldi Australia has come out on top in the Annual Supermarket Meat Awards.

Going head-to-head with retail giants Coles and Woolworths, the budget German supermarket has taken out the award for the fourth consecutive year.

How the survey works

Of the 6,000 Australians surveyed by Canstar Blue for the awards, Aldi scored five stars across all six main categories for 2021.

Those qualified to take part were asked to score meat products on a scale of 0 to 10 for overall satisfaction, while feedback was also recorded on freshness, taste and value for money.

The survey included 23 different meat categories that looked at different cuts of meat from supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths, Costco, IGA and Aldi.

"Aldi won our Most Satisfied Customers Award in all supermarket meat categories for 2021, including beef, chicken, lamb, pork and seafood," Canstar Blue’s Home and Lifestyle Expert, Megan Birot said in a statement.

"It was also rated five stars across a wide range of specific meat products, including Aussie favourites such as beef burgers, roast chicken and lamb, pork and lamb chops, beef and pork sausages and fish."

Meanwhile, Aldi and Coles shared the top spot for lamb and seafood products, scoring equally in the category.

Why shoppers prefer Aldi for meat

With Aussie shoppers spending an average of $41 a week on meat, Canstar Blue’s main goal for the research was to find out which supermarket offered customers quality with the best value for money.

"The purpose of our research was to determine which supermarket consumers should consider going to if the quality of the meat on offer is one of the main motivations for where they shop," Head of Canstar Blue, Megan Doyle said.

"While Coles and Woolworths have performed well in some areas, Aldi's dominance in these ratings is clear. The trend is that consumers who buy their meat products at Aldi generally believe they’re getting better bang for their buck."

Aldi Australia Group Buying Director for Meat and Seafood, Adrian Nel is putting the award win down to the store’s Australian-grown meat policy.

"Thanks to our Aussie-first supplier policy, 100% of Aldi's fresh meat is proudly Australian grown, which makes shopping for quality and affordable local meat easier than ever for our customers," he said.

"We understand our shoppers are motivated by quality and value, and we are very proud that this award recognises Aldi's continued efforts to ensure all fresh meat products are delicious and at the lowest possible prices."

Well, it looks like plenty of Aussies will be making a quick trip to Aldi before they fire up the BBQ this summer.

Aldi's Canstar Blue wins

It's not the first time Aldi has scooped up big wins at the Canstar Blue awards. Back in May, its popular Choceur chocolate range — which retail for a cheap and cheerful $2.99 a block — beat out pricier brands such as Lindt and Cadbury to land Canstar's gong for Best Chocolate.

In June, Aldi's extensive wine and spirits range received five stars for overall satisfaction among shoppers - the only retailer to do so — and was named Canstar Blue's 2021 Best Liquor Retailer.

And the store's Lazzio coffee range took out the top spot for Best Coffee beans in Canstar Blue's 'Most Satisfied Customer Awards'.
