The countdown is on to Prime Day when hundreds of thousands of items on Amazon Australia will have their prices slashed.

The two-day sales event is taking place on June 21 and 22 this year and will likely see everything from day to day essentials like multipacks of paper towels and Coca Cola cans, to cool tech like robot vacuums and smart speakers, get reduced.

But with so many things on sale, and only a couple of days to take advantage of the great prices, it can be easy to miss out on the best bargains.

Luckily, Cem Sibay, Vice President of Amazon, and former Vice President of Amazon Prime Day has a few tips on how to make the most of the shopping event.

Make a wish list

We won’t know exactly what will be on sale in advance (besides Amazon branded devices like Kindles, which we can safely assume will be included), so putting together a wish list of items you’d like to buy is a great place to start.

This way, as soon as the sales kick off, you can easily see which of the items on your list have been reduced, and snap them up before they run out of stock.

“We see customers starting a lot of wish lists beforehand to just very quickly go through and see if any of these items are on deal for Prime Day or not,” Sibay says.

To add items to a wish list, just go to a product’s page and a little below the ‘Add to Cart’ button is a box that says ‘Add to Wish List’.

Download the Amazon Shopping App

If you really want to get ahead of the game, you can set up alerts on your wish list so that if any items become part of a lighting deal, you’ll know instantly and can jump straight on.

To do this, you’ll need to download the Amazon Shopping App, and go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Notifications’ and select notifications for ‘Your Watched and Waitlisted Deals’.

“We actually see a majority of our purchases on Prime Day now happen on mobile devices,” Sibay says.

Ask Alexa for deals

Another way Sibay recommends staying on top of deals is to ask Alexa. He says, “utilise your Alexa devices, which can happen through the Amazon App and obviously through an Echo device or any other device that is Alexa-enabled.”

“It’s a great way for customers to keep track of new deals that come online. They can say, ‘Alexa, what are my Prime Day deals? and get verbal cues as to what their customised offers are.”

Don’t forget everyday items

While Prime Day is great for getting big ticket items at a great price, you can also save a packet on smaller, everyday items.

Last year, Aussie shoppers saved big on skincare products from WELEDA, Palmolive Foaming Hand Wash Soap, laundry products from OMO, Comfort and Fab, Coca-Cola Multipacks, Viva Paper Towels and jumbo bags of Starburst and Skittles during the Prime Day sales.

“[Our savviest shoppers] want to know the best deals out there to stock up their pantry and just everyday essentials,” Sibay says, “It’s just a fantastic time to shop for those.”

Of course, to shop the sales on Prime Day, you must be a Prime member, but if you're not already one, there's a 30-day free trial that will take you through to the sales.
