'Crazy' scenes at Aldi's Back To School sale: 'People everywhere'

Aldi’s infamous Special Buys sale has once again caused in-store chaos as customers scramble to get their hands on the German retailer’s highly sought after budget buys.

This time it was Wednesday’s Back To School event that sparked the ‘crazy' scenes, with frustrated shoppers taking to social media to vent about long queues, limited stock and ‘rude, pushy’ people.

“Another crazy day at Aldi... back to school sale,” a Facebook user wrote along with a photo of queue to the checkout which ran to the rear of the store.

“People everywhere lined up to the end of the store,” they added.

Other cranky customers piped up in the comments section to share photos of large crowds waiting outside stores and to recount their own experiences once they got inside.

‘Rude, pushy’

“Some of the ‘mothers’ at my local are an absolute disgrace. Rude, pushy, snappy. All over shoes and lunchboxes...” one reported.

As the pre-sale buzz on social media indicated, the leather school shoe range — which started at just $14.99 — was the centre of all the commotion.

“Yes oh my gosh, I couldn’t believe it! There were over 100 people in front of me. Thank goodness I wasn’t there for the shoes that’s where all the craziness was happening,” a shopper said.

“I was third in line but the woman who was first took every box of the white double strap jogger, love that,” wrote another.

‘I’ll stay away’

Others were appreciative of the heads up so they could reschedule their shopping trip to a quieter time.

“Thanks for the heads up I don't have school kids so I will stay away,” one wrote.

But, as one commenter pointed out, there’s still plenty of time to stock up on school supplies before term begins.

“It’s another three weeks before school goes back. People are crazy,” they remarked.

Some Aldi fans admitted to sourcing school stuff at competitor stores as it’s ‘less hassle’.

“As much as I love Aldi, I put my booklist in at Officeworks. Less hassle,” one wrote.

The crazy conditions, however, appeared to vary depending on where your local store was located, with a shopper in Morwell, VIC, saying they ‘cruised in and out’ of the sale.

“Wasn’t too busy at 8.30 am when I went to my local Aldi,” another wrote.

Back to school

Excitement for Aldi’s Back to School Special Buys sale ramped up on various Facebook fan groups in the days leading up to Wednesday.

One mum of a new school starter put a call out for reviews on the cheap and cheerful joggers, lace-ups and Mary Jane shoes in the Facebook group.

“Has anyone bought their kids school shoes from Aldi in the past?” she wrote.

“Would you recommend them? What is the quality and longevity like?” she added.

The response she received in the comments was overwhelmingly positive, with many fellow mums singing Aldi’s praises — below, we’ve rounded up just a few:

  • “My son loved his. And they lasted the whole year. He has had new ones each year for the last 3 years.”

  • “Amazing shoes!!! I will be buying again for my daughter.”

  • “I love them, I always buy 2 pairs as they scrape the toes after a while.”

  • “I swear by these Aldi school shoes I have 3 children and buy them every year and they last the whole year and still look new I then give them away to friends...”

  • “Great product and amazing value for money.”

One mum revealed that she’d made the switch from more expensive, big-name brands to Aldi school shoes:

“I’ve always bought Clark’s and Crosby but Aldi by far beats them all,” they admitted.

Not everyone was on board with Aldi’s range, however, with one Facebook user calling the shoes “not great and very heavy.”

“Personal opinion but after last year of straying from Clark’s I will never stray again, I will only buy Clark’s,” said another.

“I bought a pair and lasted like three months so now I go to shoes and sox and spend that more and they get shoes that last the whole year,” added a third.

Aldi’s back to school Special Buys also includes an Insulated Lunch Bag for $7.99, a Premium Backpack for $19.99 and a Fashion Pencil Case for $3.99.
