David Beckham's sarong-gate explained Netflix

Over the course of his decades long career David Beckham has been known for some truly iconic moments. From his halfway line goal in 1996, to his wedding to Victoria Beckham in 1999, to being made England Captain in 2000, but for many people one of David's most unforgettable moments is surprisingly when he worn a sarong in 1998.

During the 1998 World Cup in France, David was photographed by The Sun, wearing a sarong over his trousers whilst walking with then fiancée Victoria Beckham, with the moment sparking instant ridicule from the UK press.

We're really hoping David addresses the moment in his upcoming documentary Beckham on Netflix, which drops on 4th October, but until then here's everything you need to know about then controversial moment.

What was the David Beckham sarong moment?

During the 1998 World Cup, which was being held in France, David Beckham stepped out with then-fiancée Victoria, while wearing a black and white patterned sarong over his black trousers.

The pair were photographed together and the moment made the front page of The Sun with the headline "Beckham has got his Posh frock on". It became an instant moment of ridicule and David was heavily criticised and shamed for his fashion choice. Um, shaming a man for wearing a skirt? Thank god, we're not in the 90s anymore.

At the time many people were asked on their opinions on the sarong with one person telling Telegraph & Argus: "I don't like it. Men should be in trousers. It's not my cup of tea." And another said: "It's the same as wearing a kilt. I just couldn't wear one."

Thankfully he did have a number of supporters who didn't shame him for his sartorial choices, with one person telling the paper: "It's just for fun. I'm not surprised by anything these days."

What has David Beckham said about the sarong?

The sarong has since since been known as one of David's most memorable fashion moments, but what does David actually think of the look now?

Well back in 2014, David appeared on the Lorraine show, where he told host Lorraine Kelly, the sarong is the one thing he doesn't regret wearing.

"Sarongs are great. That's one thing I never regret because I thought it looked great and I would still wear it now," he said.

And in 2018 David doubled down on his comments, telling The Telegraph he stood by the sarong and didn't see an issue with it now or then.

"Twenty years ago when I wore that sarong, people were shocked. It was an outrage; 'why are you wearing that? What were you thinking?' Today no-one bats an eyelid if a guy wears a sarong in the street," he said.

So, now can we chill out with the sarong shaming?
