  • The late queen will be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle, alongside her parents and sister Princess Margaret.

  • While officials have yet to confirm specifics, it's expected that the remains of Queen Elizabeth's husband, Prince Philip, will be exhumed and moved soon after her burial is complete.

The world is mourning the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch who ruled the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth nations, after she died in Scotland at the age of 96 on September 8.

While British royal officials have yet to release more details surrounding the late queen's death, those within the United Kingdom, as well as Anglophiles around the globe, are already wondering about the ceremonies ahead as the world says farewell to a beloved sovereign. As the world has not witnessed a changeover in power within the British monarchy in more than seven decades, many are wondering where will Queen Elizabeth be buried?

According to ABC News, high-ranking U.K. government officials have had plans for the queen's death for years, working to create a blueprint to pay top respect to the inspiring leader and honor her life of service.

Current plans include a state funeral at Westminster Abbey, which has long served as a time-honored site of royal coronations, burials and weddings, within a period of 10 days. The New York Times indicates that the U.K. has entered an official period of mourning that will end once Queen Elizabeth reaches her final resting place — her burial will serve as a public holiday, where citizens will reflect on her reign.

Crucially, there will be a graveside service for family members at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle — before the queen is laid to rest within the King George VI Memorial Chapel specifically. There, her remains will join those of her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret.

But what of husband Prince Philip, who passed away in 2021 and was laid to rest in St. George's Chapel, but in the Royal Vault? Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth won't be buried with her husband — at least, for a brief period.

According to USA Today, there are plans to exhume Prince Philip's remains and relocate him into the same resting place that Queen Elizabeth will soon occupy near her immediate family. It's unclear when this transfer will take place, as officials have yet to announce plans for relocation and any specifics around the topic.

Moving burial sites and royal remains isn't a new concept — in fact, Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, was originally laid to rest in the Royal Vault before being transferred to a new chapel site in 1969. The Queen's mother and Princess Margaret were also buried there in 2002.
