'Clever' mum transforms Kmart bread bin into nail polish caddy

A mum from Victoria has shared her ‘clever’ hack to transform a humble bread bin from Kmart into a chic and functional storage solution for her nail polish collection.

Leanne tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she purchased the black tin bread bin — which features a lid and a small drawer — last year but decided to put it aside for use outside the kitchen.

“I knew it wouldn’t be practical to use for bread but I loved the look of it and thought I would find something to use it for later down the track,” she says.

While going through her nail polishes with her 11-year-old daughter, Leanne realised it was time to upgrade from the old gift box they were currently kept in to something a little more sturdy and stylish.

“Then it hit me to use the bread bin.

“My daughter set up the bottom draw with files, remover, cotton balls, makeup remover pads and cotton tips.”

In the top section, the pair added a small bamboo tray to corral all the bottles together and prevent them from tipping over or rolling around. When their collection expanded, they popped the newer polishes outside the tray.

“I also used a white piece of non-stick mat to keep everything stable,” Leanne says.

After sharing a snap of the transformation on Facebook, Leanne and her daughter were met with praise from fellow Kmart lovers in the comments section.

“Great idea!! Love it,” wrote one.

“You are so clever wow!” said another.

Others shared the various creative ways they’re using the bread bin in their own lives.

“I use mine for holding my dog grooming equipment,” one revealed.

“Yes I use one of mine for a first aid kit,” said another.

The mother-daughter duo even inspired a salon-owner to give the hack a go.

“Love this, would be great in my salon,” they remarked.

While Leanne’s bread bin is no longer available, Kmart is currently selling a similar version in white for $10 however it doesn’t feature the pull-out drawer.
