Love Island's Demi Jones, 22, in shock over thyroid cancer diagnosis

Love Island star Demi Jones has revealed she has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

The 22-year-old reality TV star posted a message on her Instagram saying that her tumour had been removed but that she would be having an operation to remove the rest of her thyroid.

Sharing a picture of a leaflet on the illness, she assured her fans that she was "staying very positive".

"Hi guys, I got my results today and unfortunately I have thyroid cancer," Demi wrote.

"The tumour has been removed but I’m now due to have more surgery to remove the rest of my thyroid. I’m staying very positive and I’m a strong girl so I’ll be fine, thank you for your love and support always."

"I’ll bounce back stronger," she went on.

Adding a heart emoji, the star urged fans: "Check your lumps."

In another series of stories. Demi said she’s “sad but in shock” saying it “doesn’t even feel like I have cancer”.

Demi went on to explain that she discovered a lump on her neck which turned out to be a tumour.

“So I’ve been living all these years with a tumour in my neck and I had no idea which is so scary”,” she said.

Demi underwent surgery to remove that part of the thyroid and in two weeks will go through another round of surgery to remove the rest. She will also need cancer treatment and will go on pills to regulate her hormones.

“I’ll get through this, and I’ll do it with a smile on my face. Thank you for all the love,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

According to Cancer Australia, 2,744 women and 1,041 men were diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2020, with estimations that it will remain the 9th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia for that year.

The most common symptoms are a lump or swelling in the neck or throat, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, a hoarse voice or a cough that won’t go away and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck.
