Marie Princess of Liechtenstein dies days after suffering a stroke

Marie Princess of Liechtenstein has died at the age of 81, three days after suffering a stroke.

She was the wife of the reigning Prince Hans Adam II and died in hospital in Grabs, Switzerland, at the weekend with her family at her bedside, it was reported.

According to a statement provided by the royal household, the princess "passed away peacefully in her sleep".

Marie, who was born in Prague, Czech Republic, married Hans-Adam II in Vaduz in 1967 after the couple had been engaged for two years.

He is actually her second cousin once removed.

They are parents to four children - Prince Alois, Prince Maximilian, Prince Constantin and Princess Tatjana, and have 15 grandchildren.

Marie and her husband had both stepped back from public life, after he handed the management of Liechtenstein's affairs to their eldest son Alois in 2004.

The princess consort was part of a number of organisations, including being the president of the Red Cross until 2015.
