Masked Singer's Abbie Chatfield correctly guesses major Aussie star

She might be new to The Masked Singer guessing panel, but on Monday night Abbie Chatfield managed to correctly identify a major celebrity behind the Blowfly mask.

While Chrissie Swan thought it was Grant Denyer and Dave Hughes was set on Xavier Rudd, Mel B backed Abbie with her guess of Australian music legend Shannon Noll.

“Shannon Noll! Oh my god, Nollsy!” Abbie screamed after the Shine hitmaker was revealed.

“I feel how I would imagine I would have felt if you had won Australian Idol. It’s all happening to me. Actually, I feel like I’m going to vomit, someone else talk! I’m so happy!”

Dave, who is now the only panellist to not land a correct guess this season, quickly expressed his disappointment at not being able to identify Nollsy.

“Can I say, this is the low point of my journey over the four seasons,” he said. “I pick him every year! And I, hand on heart Nollsy, did not know it was you.”

Meanwhile, Chrissie pointed out the fact that’s been almost 20 years since host Osher Günsberg and Shannon Noll first shared a stage on the inaugural season of Australian Idol, where he came in second place to Guy Sebastian.

“And he’s saying goodbye again!” Shannon remarked.

“20 years later, I’m sorry I couldn’t get you this one, I really am!” Osher replied.

The Clues

Shannon’s identity was heavily hinted at in Blowfly’s clue package, including references that he was the runner-up in two previous competitions: Australian Idol and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!.

A roulette table pointed to Shannon’s current residence in Casino, NSW, while the two wedding rings referred to the fact that he proposed to his wife on two separate occasions.

Abbie was also correct in working out that the inclusion of the names Otis and Schindler, which are both brands of lifts, was a clue towards Shannon’s hit song Lift.

On social media, a number of users managed to work out Blowfly’s identity simply by hearing Shannon’s distinctive singing voice.

“There’s literally no way the Blowfly can be anyone other than Shannon Noll,” one person wrote, while another added, “If Blowfly isn’t Shannon Noll I will eat a blowfly”.

“If Blowfly was any more obviously Nollsy, Mark Holden would appear in a puff of smoke yelling ‘Touchdown’,” a third joked.

“I guessed it from the start, there's no denying his voice,” someone else tweeted. “Been a huge fan for 20 years so I knew his voice.”

Shannon was the eighth celebrity to be revealed this season, following Sam Sparro as Popcorn, Matt Preston as Gnome, Emma Watkins as Zombie, Jamie Durie as Tiger, Pia Miranda as Thong, Lisa Curry as Caterpillar and Ryan Moloney as Knight.

The Masked Singer continues tonight at 7:30pm on Ten.
