Melania Trump's Prince Philip tribute tweet causes fierce debate

A tweet sent out by Melania Trump has caused fierce debate online over the wording she used in it.

The former First Lady of the United States tweeted her condolences to the royal family after the death of Prince Philip on Friday.

Melania Trump participates in a round table discussion with agents and officials at the Ursula Border Patrol Processing Center June 21, 2018 in McAllen, Texas. The first lady traveled to Texas to see firsthand the condition and treatment that migrant children taken from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border are receiving from the federal government. Following public outcry and criticism from members of his own party, President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to stop the separation of migrant children from their families

“President Trump and I extend our deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Family, and the people of Great Britain as the world mourns the loss of Prince Philip,” Melania wrote.

People immediately commented on the tweet, slamming Melania for referring to Donald Trump as “President Trump”.

REALTED:

“That is kind of you to acknowledge it, but please don't refer to your husband in the present tense as ‘President’,” one person wrote.

Others commented saying: “You mean FORMER president.”

However, as a Twitter user pointed out: “All presidents, prior or current, keep the title of President!”

Melania’s well-intentioned message did receive love on the social media site.

One fan of the Trumps wrote: “Your kind words are greatly appreciated. Thank you both.”

“I am not even a fan of (Donald..) Trump, but it’s really annoying how people manage to put negative comments and hate even on a post like this. RIP Prince Philip,” another person said.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral will take place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor at 3pm on Saturday, April 17th, which is midnight in Australia.

It will be a ceremonial royal funeral, rather than a state funeral and will recognise and celebrate Prince Philip’s more than 70 years of service to the commonwealth.
