Platinum Jubilee: Missing detail in Queen Elizabeth II's official portrait

The Queen is set to make history as she becomes the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, after spending 70 years on the throne.

The Royal Family has released an official Platinum Jubilee portrait of The Queen, showing the 96-year-old monarch sitting in her Windsor Castle home with one missing detail.

The Queen looks comfortable in the photo, with her hands resting on her lap while wearing an understated blue Angela Kelly coat. Wearing a string of pearls along with her engagement ring on her finger, the monarch was notably more relaxed than previous Jubilees.

For her Golden and Diamond Jubilees, the royal chose to wear elaborate tiaras and her royal sash and medals. Her Majesty also wore her Imperial State Crown in her Silver Jubilee portrait, which was missing from this year's photo.

Photographer Ranald Mackechnie was commissioned to take the official portrait, after taking two previous portraits of the Queen in 2016. The portrait was taken in the Victoria Vestibule, with the statue of King Charles II and the castle’s round tower visible in the background.

The Queen also addressed the public on the eve of the Platinum Jubilee in a personal message.

“Thank you to everyone who has been involved in convening communities, families, neighbours and friends to mark my Platinum Jubilee, in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth.

“I know that many happy memories will be created at these festive occasions,” she continued.

Her Majesty then said she hopes that the Jubilee will “provide an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last 70 years, as we look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm.”

This comes after the news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter Lilibet will finally meet the Queen, who she’s named after, on her first birthday this weekend.

The family are flying to the UK for the Jubilee celebrations, marking the first time the couple will be reunited with the royal family since they stepped down as senior members in March 2020.

While Harry and Meghan will not stand on the balcony at Buckingham Palace during the Trooping the Colour, they are likely to take Archie and Lilibet to Windsor Castle on Saturday, Lilibet’s first birthday.

Her Majesty has also not seen Archie since the family moved to the US.
