Prince Philip death: Where are the members of the royal family now?

On Friday 9 April, Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, had died at Windsor Castle.

In the statement, it said the Duke of Edinburgh has “passed away peacefully” earlier in the day. The royal had been sent home from hospital just three weeks ago after a procedure for a pre-existing condition.

The Duke was married to Queen Elizabeth II for 74 years and they have four children together - Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward - and eight grandchildren, as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

Various branches of the family are spread across the UK from Scotland to Norfolk, as well as internationally: his grandson, Prince Harry now lives with his wife Meghan and son, Archie, in California.

With the news of his death on Friday, where are the members of the royal family now?

Prince Charles

In February, Prince Charles made the trip from Highgrove House, his residence in Gloucestershire, to London to visit his father in hospital. Prince Philip had been admitted to hospital for treatment for a pre-existing heart condition. He was later moved to a hospital in east London for further specialist treatment.

His father’s death comes on the same day as his 16th wedding anniversary to his wife Camilla, the duchess of Cornwall. The pair were married in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall in 2005.

Princess Anne

The Queen and Prince Philip’s only daughter, Princess Anne lives on the Gatcombe Park estate in the Cotswolds with her family, including her husband Timothy Laurence.

She resides there along with her daughter Zara Phillips and her husband Mike Tindall. Anne recently became a grandmother for the fifth time, as her daughter Zara welcomed a son, Lucas Philip.

Prince Andrew

Around five miles south of Windsor Castle, the Queen and Prince Philip’s son Prince Andrew lives in the Royal Lodge.

The Grade II listed building was formerly the residence of the Queen Mother until her death in 2002. Prince Andrew has lived there with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson since 2004.

Prince Edward

The couple’s youngest child Prince Edward lives with his wife Sophie Wessex in Surrey country house, Bagshot Park.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have lived there for over 20 years, since their royal wedding in 1999.

Prince William

The Queen’s grandson Prince William resides at Kensington Palace in London along with his wife Kate Middleton and their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

They have lived at the official royal residence since 2013.

The Sussexes have been seen out at many public engagements in recent weeks - including the Duchess paying tribute to Sarah Everard at the Clapham vigil in south London. They have also continued Zoom engagements.

It was anticipated that the next biggest event in the calendar for senior members of the family would be the Queen’s 95th birthday on 21 April, but these plans are now likely to be altered or postponed due to the death of the duke.

Prince Harry

Following his departure from the Royal Family, Prince Harry now lives in Santa Barbara, California with his wife Meghan Markle and their son Archie.

The couple moved into their £11 million home in July 2020.

It had previously been reported that Harry and Meghan would be making regular trips back to the UK - as they still hold charity titles and patronages in Britain - but due to the coronavirus pandemic they have remained in America since moving.
