SAS Australia star who was paid nothing to appear on the show

If you’ve ever tuned into SAS Australia and wondered why so many celebrities would agree to sign up for the most brutal reality TV show in the country, we now have an idea why.

The Daily Telegraph has revealed the rumoured salaries for each contestant on the military training series, including one star who was paid nothing.

The publication reports that the total potential earnings for a number of this year’s celebrities - including singer/actor Bonnie Anderson, model Jett Kenny and socialite Brynne Edelsten - is between $50k and $80k.

Politician Emma Husar, who was the fourth recruit to quit the show, reportedly received around $25k for signing on.

The highest-earning star is ex-NRL player Sam Burgess, who is rumoured to have been paid between $150k and $200k, followed by tennis champion Mark Philippoussis at $100k.

Meanwhile, celebrity chef Manu Feildel reportedly didn’t make any money from his appearance on the Channel Seven series.

The former My Kitchen Rules judge allegedly received “no special fee” as the show became a part of his contract with the network and helped fulfil his annual requirements.

It’s also claimed that on top of the celebrities’ sign-up fees, they received around $2500 every day they lasted in the two-week competition, plus a bonus of between $1000 and $5000 every three days.

In season one of SAS Australia, convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby took home the most money with her paycheck rumoured to be between $80k and 100k.

Manu’s dramatic exit

Manu voluntarily left SAS Australia last week immediately after chief instructor Ant Middleton explained the ‘Death by Drowning’ challenge to the recruits.

“I came on this course to prove something to myself, and I just realised I don’t need to prove anything,” he said after he handed in his number.

“I’ve got a f***ing good life. I’ve got a f***ing good life, and I want it back.”

Speaking on The Morning Show after his elimination aired, Manu said it was the fear of an earlier challenge that helped him make the decision to quit the show.

“The previous day there was this tunnel you had to go through which I didn’t get to do, because Sam Burgess was in there for too long,” he explained.

“We were promised that we would be doing that again in the next few days and I lost sleep over that already. Claustrophobia is something that I suffer from.

“I thought I’d give the next day a go to see what was on offer. When I saw the jeep hanging from a crane over the water, I knew what would happen… I was out, there was no way I would change my mind.”
