Sunrise hosts left shocked by guest's response to school shooting

Sunrise hosts David 'Kochie' Koch and Natalie Barr were left shocked on Wednesday morning after speaking with FBI veteran and active shooter expert, Greg Shaffer, about a school shooting in Texas overnight.

The shooting, which occurred at Robb Elementary School, west of San Antonio, claimed the lives of at least 18 children and three adults, one of whom is a teacher.

Mr Shaffer gave a very blunt response to how to solve America's mass shooting crisis, leaving Kochie and Nat visibly stunned.

"We need to put armed police officers in every school in America, no questions asked," Mr Shaffer told the hosts.

"Secondly, we need to get better at realising the pre-indicators of violence so we can prevent these attacks from happening before they do.

"We’re doing a pretty good job at how to respond to these, but we need to stop them before they start."

Kochie questioned the guest, asking, "So Greg Shaffer, FBI veteran and expert on active shooter situations, you’re saying the way to fight this is with more guns? Is to actually put armed police in every school?

"Australians would shake their head at that and say, ‘Why don’t you tighten gun laws?’. Is that unrealistic in the US now? Has it got beyond the point of no return?"

Shaffer claimed America doesn't have a "gun violence problem" and instead has an "evil person problem", adding that there's no way the country will change its gun laws.

"These people are sick, they’re violent by nature and that’s what causing this," he said. "You can’t confiscate all of the weapons in America and with our second amendment, you lawfully can’t do it."

He also added that there are murders in Australia and in the UK where there are strict gun laws, but Nat hit back, "But Greg Shaffer, we're not up to hundreds of mass shootings in this country, of course, there are guns on the streets, but it's just not like [America] in other countries."

"Not even in Canada, across your border," Kochie added.

"The fact that Americans don't admit that there's a problem, isn't that a problem?" she said.

After Shaffer finished on the show, Kochie shared his shock, "That gives you insight into the horrific psyche of Americans on this situation."

Nat said that he was likely right in the fact that there are more guns than people in the US and questioned how would they realistically get rid of them all.

"So, you just give up?" Kochie questioned. "Just give up and everywhere you go has an armed policeman to shoot back. And give kids in school a gun? That's been recommended as well, so they can shoot back. Goodness."

"If people like Obama couldn't do it, good luck," Nat added.
