Super Bowl: Fans left baffled by The Weeknd’s performance
Fans were left stunned after The Weeknd's halftime show at the Super Bowl on Sunday with the 30-year-old performing his biggest hits on the night at Raymond James Stadium in Florida.
The singer belted out Blinding Lights, Can't Feel My Face, StarBoy, Earned It and I Feel It Coming and while some viewers loved the show, there was one moment that left others truly baffled.
Backup dancers for the singer wore white masks that covered most of their faces - a homage to the Weeknd doning face bandages as part of a character he played for his recent album After Hours.
The masks also covered the dancers’ mouths, likely a Covid-safe design, but many thought their outfits resembles jockstraps. You know, those things that protect men's lower halves during sport, which would be somewhat fitting for the Super Bowl.

"The army of dudes in red blazers and jockstrap masks at #TheWeeknd halftime show will fuel my nightmares," one Twitter user joked.
"Is it me or do the dancers in the halftime show look like they are wearing a jockstrap?" another added.
"Half time show requirements = must wear a jockstrap on face," someone else said.
"Somewhere there's a jockstrap store with empty shelves," another user joked.
"Based on this halftime show, it looks like I’m going to wear a jockstrap on my head tomorrow. I’ve got to stay in style," one added.
The singer himself opted not to wear bandages on his face for the big performance, sharing the significance of them with Variety.
"The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated," he said.
Speaking of the character he's been playing recently in his After Hours music videos, he said: "It’s all a progression and we watch The Character’s storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on."
Other fans were simply stunned by the performance.
"ABEL AKA THE WEEKND SET THE BAR SOOOO HIGH AND HE DIDNT F**IN MISS!!! THIS WAS PURE ART!" one very excited fan wrote.
"Talk about Performance Art! wow wow wow!! Abel, you earned it!" another said.
"I loved how they #TheWeeknd used the bandages to keep with the #AfterHours theme but to also use it to tie in masks," someone else wrote.
