Thanasi Kokkinakis rocks $6 Kmart top at Australian Open

Aussie tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis is being hailed online after winning his first Australian Open match in six years wearing a Kmart T-shirt.

The 24-year-old’s eyes filled with tears after beating South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon in a dominant 6-4 6-1 6-1 win.

It was a long time coming for Kokkinakis, who was floored by glandular fever this time last year and has endured a long list of serious injury setbacks throughout his career.

And while many online were applauding the South Australian’s triumph, other couldn’t look past his budget black activewear top from Kmart.

According to tennis earnings figures, the Aussie star has earned more than $1.4 million in his career.

“Mate, Kmart special,” Kokkinakis said after the match.

“I went to Chadstone, bought some $6 tees and went to work. I just felt comfortable in it.

“I tried to order some more but they got cancelled and they didn’t make it through to South Yarra.

“It’s tough out here, man, it’s not what it used to be – but it’s alright, blue collar way.”

The move certainly won him some fans online, with one person commenting saying: “Did you see that Kokkinakis was wearing a Kmart shirt for his match. Finally an outfit choice I could afford!”

“Kokkinakis going full Aussie by wearing Kmart on court. Winner,” another said.

“The real question is when Thanasi Kokkinakis went to buy his tennis gear at Kmart did he also leave with a new coffee maker, $2 socks and headphones he didn't need? That's a true Kmart special,” a commenter wrote.

The $6 top in question appears to be the Active Performance Tee which comes in sizes XS to 3XL.

With a crew neck design, moisture wicking fabric and a curved back hem, it’ll no doubt be a staple on tennis courts around Australia after Kokkinakis’ endorsement.
