Boy, 4, killed after being hit by garbage truck on his bike

A four-year-old boy has died after being struck by a garbage truck while riding his bike in northern Tasmania.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash in the northern suburbs of Launceston around 12.15pm on Wednesday.

The boy, who lived in the street, died at the scene, police say.

"We're unclear as to how this tragic circumstance has happened," Tasmania Police Inspector Ruth Orr told reporters.

The boy's family members, including his mum, were home at the time, Insp Orr said.

"The driver of the truck was exceptionally shaken up and I suggest in shock," she said.

"This is the most confronting (scene) that I've attended in 25 years."

Police will speak to the driver of the truck and examine footage captured by a camera on the vehicle.

There were several witnesses to the crash, they say.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and workplace health and safety authorities are involved in ongoing investigations.
