Boy hospitalised after grandfather mistakes cleaning product for orange juice
A young boy has been hospitalised after his grandfather accidentally gave him an orange-scented cleaning product to drink.
The grandfather says he thought the toxic product, which has become popular online, was orange juice due to its colour and smell.
The product's labels were in Japanese which the Chinese grandfather could not read, Star Video reported.
The incident happened in the Chinese city of Suzhou on Friday.
Once the error was realised, the boy was rushed to hospital where a gastric lavage was performed. Video uploaded by Star Video shows the child conscious in his hospital bed.
Weibo users say grandfather unfortunate
The incident has since gone viral on Chinese Twitter-like site Weibo where it has been viewed more than 100 million times.
Many users sympathised with the grandfather saying the mistake was easy to make.
"The grandfather is likely illiterate and the liquid is very similar... I don't blame him," one person wrote.
"He clearly didn't want to cause any harm," another said.
"The packaging is too similar to orange juice," one user commented.
Others urged parents not to allow grandparents to make the same mistake. In China grandparents regularly play a larger role in the upbringing and care of young children.
The NSW Poisons Information Centre says if a child has ingested a poisonous product, do not try to make the child vomit and seek immediate emergency help.
