What is inside Coles' new $80 'Community Box' to ease shopping stress?

Coles has launched a “Community Box” containing fresh food and household essentials like toilet paper for vulnerable Australians during the coronavirus pandemic.

Following in Woolworths’ footsteps, the grocery chain is offering the $80 care package to people with disabilities, those aged 65 and up and Indigenous Australians over 50 with a My Aged Care number or NDIS number.

“The health of all Australians is important to Coles, so the box contains nutritious items for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the total calorific content of the box enough to support two people aged 65+ for 7 days,” Coles said on their website.

“We’ve also included household essentials too, to ensure we’re supporting customers who currently find it difficult to shop in our stores.”

Inside the Coles ‘Community Box’

For breakfast, Coles is offering two-litre bottles of long-life milk and orange juice, cereal or oats, spreads like Vegemite or jam and cereal bars or dried fruits.

For lunch and dinner, shoppers will receive pasta or rice, canned vegetables, soup, canned fish or meat and fruit.

Baked beans and tortilla wraps are also included.

Customers will receive tea or instant coffee and biscuits for snacks.

Household items like toilet paper (a 4-pack), one bar of soap and cleaning spray or wipes also come with the “Community Box”.

“We’ll do our very best to get these items to you, but they may vary according to supply. If we do substitute an item, they will always be of a similar quality and value,” Coles said online.

Who can order the ‘Community Box’ and when is it available?

The box will be available for all eligible Coles Online Priority Services (COPS) customers in the coming days, the supermarket said.

“Very soon, eligible COPS customers will be able to register their interest in ordering a box. We hope to have this available over the coming days.

“When the Coles Community Box delivery service is ready, eligible customers will receive an SMS link to purchase the box from Coles and have it delivered to their door via Australia Post.”

Customers can apply for COPS by visiting the chain’s website and entering their My Aged Care number or NDIS code.

Can Coles deliver to me?

The “Community Box” will be available in areas already services by Coles online shopping, which does include remote areas in parts of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Far North Queensland.

“New customers can sign up to the Remote Delivery Service by registering at Coles Online and entering their address details,” Coles said.

All boxes are required to be paid for online prior to delivery in order to protect Coles staff.
