Covid Victoria: Cases drop again ahead of eased restrictions

Victoria’s low daily cases continue to drive down Melbourne’s 14-day rolling average as anticipation grows for Premier Daniel Andrew’s Sunday announcement detailing the easing of restrictions.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced 12 new cases on Thursday – a day after Mr Andrews said he will look to go further than what is outlined for Step Two of the roadmap out of lockdown.

There were two more deaths recorded, taking the state’s death toll to 773.

Victoria has now had 15 or less cases in four of the last five days, meaning the 14-day rolling average now stands at 26.7.

Mr Andrews said on Wednesday the case numbers are better than expected.

He will address media on Sunday, revealing what steps Melbourne will take as it moves forward on the roadmap.

He said the government was still working on when changes would be implemented, revealing it could be midnight Sunday or midnight Monday.

Under the roadmap announced earlier this month, Step Two includes allowing public gatherings for five people from two households.

Schools, child care and some workplaces would open, along with outdoor pools, while personal trainers could operate with two clients.

There could be outdoor religious services for up to five people, plus a leader.

Asked on Wednesday if he was looking at going further when he announces an easing of restrictions in coming days, Mr Andrews said: "Yes, I am."

"But I'm not in a position to give you the full list of what we're looking at."
