Coronavirus Victoria: Eight more die as daily cases plateau
Eight more Victorians have died from coronavirus while daily cases have remained at 42 for the second consecutive day.
It follows zero deaths on Tuesday – the first time in more than two months there had been no recorded deaths in the previous 24 hours.
Wednesday’s death toll is the highest in the last five days. It takes the state’s death toll to 737.
There have been 824 deaths nationally.
Melbourne reaches roadmap milestone
The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the 14-day rolling average of daily cases for metropolitan Melbourne has dropped below 50 for the first time since the peak of the second wave.
It now sits at 49.6.
The city can move to the next step of the roadmap when the figure is between 30 and 50, but Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has stressed the move cannot come before September 28.
At 11.59pm tonight, restrictions in regional Victoria will be eased, allowing for people to leave their home freely, while retail and hospitality will reopen.
The move was possible after regional Victoria’s 14-day daily average dropped to 3.6 on Tuesday while it had zero mystery cases in the previous two weeks.
“We should look to what is happening original Victoria at 11.59pm tonight and be confident we can deliver exactly that outcome in Metropolitan Melbourne and we will,” he said.
There are now less than 1000 active cases across Victoria – the first time in “a long time”, Mr Andrews said.
There are currently 991 active cases.
“That is very significant.”
