Coronavirus Victoria: One new case as Melbourne's 14-day average plummets
Victoria’s streak of daily cases below five continues, with just one new case confirmed on Tuesday.
It follows four new cases on Monday and is the fifth day in a row cases have been below five, with just 10 cases across that period.
The continued downward trajectory in known infections is likely to heap further pressure on Premier Daniel Andrews to ease restrictions for businesses sooner than the provisional date of November 2.
The Department of Health and Human Services announced zero new deaths with the state’s death toll remaining at 817.
Metropolitan Melbourne’s 14-day rolling average has dropped to 6.4, edging closer to the initial trigger point of five for Step Three of the city’s roadmap.
Mystery cases in Melbourne have fallen to 13 between October 4 and 17.
Tuesday’s numbers were delayed and appears to be due to determination of another case which is isolating interstate however the infected person has a Victorian address.
Victoria eying hotel quarantine alternative
The latest figures come as the state government is reportedly looking at scaling back its trouble-plagued hotel quarantine program and using electronic monitoring devices for some returned travellers.
The use of such devices was being considered as one way of making sure returned travellers are isolating, The Age reported on Tuesday.

Prominent lawyer and human rights advocate Julian Burnside, the president of Liberty Victoria, said he backed electronic monitoring as an alternative to hotel quarantine.
"It seems to me the idea is a good one, as long as it saves people from something worse," he told ABC radio.
"I don't like the idea of electronic monitoring, but if it's an infringement of individual liberties for the purpose of making the country safer, which is the case, then I think it's justifiable.
"If it saves you the horror of being locked up in a hotel room for two weeks, then I think it's justifiable as well."
