Coronavirus Victoria: The hotspot Melbourne suburbs with the most virus cases
Victoria’s coronavirus cases have skyrocketed in July, with the state twice recording its highest daily totals this week.
While initially 10 Melbourne postcodes were placed under restrictions and nine public housing towers were plunged into a hard lockdown, health authorities have decided the entire city of five million people is to undergo a six-week lockdown with the number of cases outside the original hotspots soaring.
On Tuesday, a staggering 191 coronavirus cases were confirmed – the third highest in any state or territory since the pandemic began – and took the state’s active cases to 772.
Less than 20 per cent of the record daily total are linked to current outbreaks and 154 are under investigation.
On Wednesday, a further 134 cases were announced.
Which Melbourne suburbs have the most cases?
While the majority of cases have been restricted to Melbourne’s north and west, a local government area in the southwest has suffered a surge in cases.
Suburbs within the Wyndham LGA were not part of the state government’s 10 postcodes lockdown announced last week yet it now has the second highest active cases in the state with 105 cases as of Tuesday.
The suburb at the centre of its surge in cases is Truganina, where the Al-Taqwa College outbreak rose to 90 with 12 new cases announced on Tuesday.
The Coles Distribution Centre cluster in Laverton also falls under that LGA.
The highest number of active cases are in the Hume LGA, in the city’s north, with 145 as of Tuesday.
That area includes Broadmeadows, one of the original 10 suburbs identified as hotspots during the second surge of cases in the state.
Other suburbs in the LGA which were locked down in the 10 postcode restrictions are Craigieburn, Dallas, Mickleham, Roxburgh Park, Jacana and Kalkallo.
Melbourne LGA, which includes the public housing towers located in North Melbourne, now has 97 active cases as widespread testing of all residents of the towers is fast-tracked.
Brimbank LGA has 77 active cases and includes the original hotspot of Keilor Downs.
Moonee Valley LGA now has 50 active cases and includes the Flemington public housing towers as well as locked down suburbs of Airport West and Niddrie.
Moreland, which includes the locked-down suburbs of Brunswick West, Fawkner, Glenroy, Oak Park and Hadfield, has 38 active cases.
Whittlesea has 36 active cases and includes the locked-down suburb of Donnybrook.
Darebin LGA has 16 active cases.
Which Melbourne suburbs have the least cases?
According to current data, Melbourne’s south currently has extremely low levels of active cases despite being subject to Melbourne’s six-week lockdown.
Glen Eira LGA, which neighbours St Kilda and includes Caulfield, Bentleigh and Carnegie, has no active cases.
Moving south, Frankston LGA, which includes Carrum Downs, also has zero cases, while Kingston LGA has one.
Bayside LGA, which includes Brighton, has just one active case as does the Mornington Peninsula LGA.
In the northeast Nillimbuk LGA, which includes Eltham, has one active case.
