Woman 'spits and coughs' on police officer 'on way to COVID-19 test'

A woman has allegedly repeatedly spat and coughed on a police officer after claiming she was on her way to get tested for COVID-19.

The 25-year-old woman was driving an Audi on Greenacre Road in Sydney’s southwest when police attempted to pull her over about 5pm Friday.

She allegedly sped away at 120km/h in a 50km/h zone, before ignoring a red light traffic signal.

The driver was pulled over after entering heavy traffic following the high-speed pursuit.

The 25-year-old woman was approached by police, however allegedly refused to leave her car, and claimed she was on her way to a COVID-19 test.

She then allegedly coughed and spat at an officer as she was placed under arrest, according to a NSW Police statement.

The police then held the woman to the ground as she allegedly resisted arrest and spat at the officer for a second time.

Police took the 25-year-old to Bankstown Police Station and she was charged with an array of offences including driving recklessly and assaulting an officer in execution of duty.

She is set to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

The woman showed no signs of COVID-19 symptoms, but the officer has taken a test for precaution.

Traffic and Highway Command Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said during the current climate this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.

“Police will not tolerate being spat at in any climate, let alone the one we’re facing right now. It’s as simple as that,” he said in a police statement.
