NSW Covid cases surge to highest daily total in NINE weeks

Covid cases are continuing to climb in NSW with the state reporting its highest daily total in weeks.

Wednesday's 25,235 new infections total is the highest since March 16, however that day's total of 30,402 was the result of a backlog of cases.

Excluding that anomaly, the last time the state surpassed 25,000 daily cases was January 21 over two months ago.

The state's hospitalisations are also on the rise with 1,301 people currently receiving treatment for the virus.

That figure stood at 1,283 on Tuesday and 1,270 on Monday.

There were a further 15 Covid deaths reported – the highest daily total since February 20.

Epidemiologist Professor Nancy Baxter warned last week Australia's Covid peak amid the BA.2 subvariant wave has "a way to go" yet.

Prof Baxter, of the University of Melbourne, urged those who have not received a booster to book theirs, warning protection from previous jabs is beginning to wane.

Victoria recorded 11,749 new Covid cases on Wednesday.

Omicron is driving surges in infections right across the globe, with cases growing in the UK while China is facing its biggest threat to its Covid-zero strategy yet.
