Daily Covid cases in NSW surpass 2500 again
For the second day in a row, NSW has not seen a sharp increase in daily Covid cases with 2,501 new infections reported on Monday.
The number of cases is down from Sunday's figure of 2,566 cases, despite testing numbers remaining very high.
Monday's figure came from 144,368 tests processed in the past 24-hour period by NSW Health.
Cases have exploded in the past fortnight, with NSW setting a record for new daily infections in four straight days from Thursday through to Sunday.
Hospital and ICU admissions on the rise
The number of people in hospital has begun to tick up, with 261 Covid patients currently admitted for care, according to NSW Health. Of those, 33 are in intensive care units.
That is up from 28 patients in the ICU from yesterday.
Last Monday, there were 171 people in hospital with Covid-19 and 24 in the ICU.
He resisted calls to reintroduce a mask mandate to slow the spread and reiterated the important factor for the government was hospital admissions, which have not yet begun to rise in any significant manner despite the seven-fold increase in cases in the past two weeks.
As of Monday, 93.4 per cent of people over the age of 16 in NSW have had two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.
Despite resisting calls from the state opposition leader and a number of health experts to reintroduce a mask mandate, Mr Perrottet said now was the time for "personal responsibility".
However he did not rule out future restrictions, saying the government was "always" assessing the Covid situation and its response will be tailored as the situation evolves.
"That's exactly what we've done over the last two years. When we believe there's evidence in front of us we need to potentially tighten restrictions, we will," he told reporters on Sunday.
Victoria, meanwhile, reported 1,302 new Covid cases on Monday and no deaths.
