Dingo bites child on K'gari sparking warning to tourists to 'remain vigilant'

Medical officers treated a child who was injured by a dingo.

Patrols have been increased across K’gari, formerly Fraser Island, after a child was bitten by a dingo on Wednesday.

Authorities were alerted to the incident just after 1pm and it’s believed the child received treatment from ambulance officers after the attack at Eli Creek, a popular swimming hole. Rangers are attempting to identify the animal which is reportedly wearing a collar child and caused "minor injuries" to the child.

Queensland’s Department of Environment (DESI) called on visitors to the tourist island to “remain vigilant”, never walk alone and carry a stick at all times. Speaking directly to parents, it suggested they keep their children close and within arm’s length.

DESI reminded visitors to the island to remain “dingo safe” at all times and suggested they:

  • Never feed dingoes

  • Lock up food stores and iceboxes

  • Secure rubbish

  • Camp in fenced areas where possible

It urged anyone experiencing a negative dingo encounter to report it to a ranger by calling 07 4127 9150 or emailing dingo.ranger@des.qld.gov.au.

More to come.
