Friends speak out after meter reader mauled to death by dogs: 'Remarkable man'

Friends of the meter reader who was mauled to death by two dogs at a Queensland property says they are "broken" as they look to support his devastated fiancée and family.

Kane Minion, an Energex contractor who got engaged on Christmas Day last year, was set upon by the dogs after entering the Logan property via the front gate of a long, winding driveway at around 11am last Saturday.

When police arrived they found the 42-year-old lying unconscious in the fenced front yard with serious injuries. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.

On Thursday friend Krystal Haskett set up a GoFundMe page for Mr Minion's fiancée Toni Baird and family to help ease "this outrageously heavy burden".

"Together we can help them get though this tremendously hard time," she wrote alongside another friend, Mat.

Ms Haskett paid tribute to Mr Minion, describing him as a "remarkable human being" and the "type of friend you could really count upon".

"He loved animals and creatures of all kinds. Most of all Kane loved his friends, his family and his fiancee Toni," she said.

Mr Minion and Ms Baird had been engaged for close to a year and were in the process of planning their upcoming wedding after "a decade of life in love together".

"No tragically, Kane is gone," she said.

"Kane was kind, he was gentle and he was a friend to so many. The type of friend you could really count upon. A best friend. Taken so suddenly, too soon. Without a chance to say goodbye.

"We are broken."

Dogs put down after attack

Logan City Council confirmed to Yahoo News Australia both animals, a Bandog Bullmastiff and a Rhodesian ridgeback cross which had been registered, had been put down and neither dog was on “any list of regulated menacing or dangerous dogs”.

“Earlier this week, the owners of the dogs legally surrendered the animals to the council to allow the matter to be dealt with in the best interest of public safety,” a statement said.

The property had been accessed by meter readers previously when the dogs were contained by a second fence, the Courier Mail reported.

A sign on the front gate of the property reads: ‘Warning — Guard dogs on duty’.

Investigations into the death are ongoing, Queensland Police said.

The GoFundMe page has a target of $20,000.
