'GOSH': Frank reaction to Victoria's Covid crisis, cases above 700

Victoria has reported a further 705 locally acquired Covid-19 cases as its surging Delta outbreak continues to cause concern.

On Saturday, the state reported a record 847 cases with its daily total likely to surpass daily infections currently being reported in NSW in the coming days.

The Department of Health confirmed a further death from Covid. It takes the outbreak's death toll to 25.

There were 51,252 coronavirus tests processed and 51,252 vaccine doses administered at state-run hubs on Sunday.

Leading expert's concern over outbreak

Speaking to ABC News Breakfast on Monday, UNSW epidemiologist and World Health Organisation advisor Mary-Louise McLaws couldn't hide her concern over Melbourne's predicament.

"In Melbourne, I looked at your data and you've got about five metropolitan areas that have been - gosh - increasing say 10 per cent, and I've looked at it over three incubation periods," she told Melbourne-based host Lisa Millar.

With the areas of high infection interconnected, Ms McLaws said it was "very difficult" to close off such suburbs from the rest of Melbourne in a way NSW authorities had with its 12 LGAs of concern earlier in the outbreak.

Despite the rise in cases, Premier Daniel Andrews has suggested the state's stringent lockdown is nearing its end.

Restrictions are set to experience a "modest" easing on Wednesday with a return of group personal training, golfing and tennis, while residents of locked down areas will be able to travel 15km from home, up from 10, while patron caps in regional venues will increase from 20 to 30.

The changes are a result of Victoria reaching the impending 80 per cent single dose target.
