Grisly discovery in dog's mouth after mum 'kills newborn baby'
A mother has been arrested in Brazil for killing her one-week-old baby and setting the body alight on waste ground before a dog dragged the newborn’s charred remains along the street.
The 24-year-old suspect, who has not been named, was arrested in the city of Anapolis in the Brazilian state of Goias after her baby’s burned body was found on a street on the morning of Wednesday (local time).
According to the Civil Police, a resident saw a dog dragging something along the road and shouted at the animal to drop it.
When the dog obeyed the resident’s command, he approached and realised it was the body of a dead baby and immediately called the Military Police.
Police teams cordoned off the area and carried out a preliminary investigation while the body was taken away to be examined.
Chief Wllisses Valentim, head of the investigation, said the mother was arrested and confessed to the crime.
The video shows the young mother parked by an area of waste ground and fetching fuel from her car before allegedly burning her baby’s body.
According to Chief Valentim, the woman hid her pregnancy from her family and even from her boyfriend.
She also reportedly said she only breastfed the baby on the first day and could not say for certain whether the infant was dead or alive when she allegedly set the body on fire.
The baby still had the hospital identification bracelet and was about a week old, according to the Civil Police.
Meanwhile, the suspect is being held in police custody as the investigation continues.
