'Immensely sad': Swimmer struggles to save friend swept off rocks

Paramedics have described the "immensely sad" scenes surrounding the death of a fisherman in Sydney's south.

A man fell into waters at Kurnell while rock fishing on Friday about 3pm and became unconscious.

Another man who was fishing with him was also pulled into the water and desperately tried to rescue his friend.

“A male on a jet ski came across a struggling swimmer trying to save his unconscious friend," Inspector Shane Whittaker from NSW Ambulance said.

Emergency services managed to pull the men from the water but the unconscious man couldn’t be revived.

The other man, aged in his 50s, was hospitalised in a stable condition at Sutherland Hospital, NSW Ambulance said.

Inspector Whittaker said a helicopter, four wheel drives and ambulances tried to save those struggling in the water.

“It was an immensely sad scene as the unconscious male could not be saved,” he said.

The man who died was not wearing a life jacket, while the survivor was, 7News reported.
