'Just disturbing': Woman finds dead toddler in middle of street

A man has been arrested after a toddler was found dead in the middle of a Texas street early on Saturday morning (local time).

Antwainese Square, who lives in a Dallas neighbourhood, was on a morning walk when she saw the child's body laying on the street.

She initially thought it was a dog, she told NBC, but as she got closer she realised the chilling reality of what she was looking at.

"The baby didn't have shoes, he didn't have a shirt on and he was just laying there..." she told the network.

"For a kid to have to go through that, that's just disturbing, and that's disturbing for me to carry all day."

The body of the child, believed to be just four years old, appeared to have suffered a violent death with “an edged weapon,” assistant Police Chief Albert Martine said.

"We are shocked, we are very angry about what has happened to this small child,” Martinez said.

"Unfortunately a small child was lost today in our city through a violent act and we will pursue justice to find whoever did this and bring some sort of closure, not only to family but to the community."

On Saturday night (local time), police said they had arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the boy's death.

"He is charged with kidnapping and theft. Dallas investigators anticipate additional charges, pending results from a forensic analysis," Dallas investigators said in a statement overnight.

The Dallas Morning News reported it was unclear if the suspect knew the child.

Police have not released the identity of the boy or details about what led to the arrest.
