  • Chopping down rainforests could increase virus risk for humans

Researchers have discovered animals in an African forest have been eating bat poo laden with viruses, offering a daunting insight into how new infections could jump to humans.

The study by the University of Stirling and the University of Wisconsin-Madison saids animals like chimpanzees were eating the poo as a result of deforestation in Uganda.

According to the peer-reviewed study, which features in the Nature journal, guano is an "alternative source of crucial minerals" for the animals after the the palm trees they once consumed were "harvested to extinction".

Lab analysis of the poo identified several viruses, including one related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It remains unknown whether the betacoronavirus found in the guano (bat excrement) is transmissible to humans, but it does offer an example of how new infections might jump species barriers," a press release said.

  • Elon Musk takes swipe at Anthony Albanese

Elon Musk continues to take aim at Australia over requests to remove vision of the Wakeley church stabbing on his social media platform X.

The matter has ended up in court, with the Australian government arguing Musk has not gone far enough to comply with the Online Safety Act, ordering videos of the attack to be removed globally, not just in Australia.

“Global takedown orders go against the very principles of a free and open internet and threaten free speech everywhere," X said of the request.

A breastfeeding mum, who was kicked out of a gig by comedian Arj Barker for what he says was her distracting baby, embarked on a media blitz Monday night to share her side of the story.

However Trish Faranda's appearances on Nine's A Current Affair and Ten's The Project didn't go as smoothly as producers might have anticipated with seven-month-old baby Clara full of energy as the cameras rolled.

Mum Trish Faranda stressed to ACA host Ally Langdon her daughter was quieter during the gig than her appearance on TV, with it difficult at times to hear both Faranda and Langdon.

At one stage, The Project host Sarah Harris asked if Clara could be handed to her father off-screen.

Barker claimed to Yahoo Lifestyle he did not know Faranda was breastfeeding when he ordered her out of his Melbourne gig.
