Man's heartbreaking last words to fiancée as he died in her arms
A man who fled the scene of a fatal stabbing in Lake Macquarie has been arrested and charged with murder.
A 35-year-old Glenn Smith was stabbed at a Bolton Point home about 10.45pm on Sunday and died an hour later in hospital in his fiancée Michelle Bell’s arms.
Ms Bell said she witnessed the one fatal blow to Mr Smith’s heart.
“It’s [the weapon] has gone in and killed my baby,” she said through tears.
“I got him to the road and he collapsed.
“He opened up his eyes and he said, ‘I love you’. And that was it, he died.”
Only two weeks ago, Mr Smith had proposed and Ms Bell thought they would spend the rest of their lives together.
“Me and my babies love him, he’s our rock,” Ms Bell said.
“He was the best guy and [his attackers] took him from me.”
Police are investigating if Mr Smith was known to his attacker, but it appears they were strangers.
A man aged in his 50s assisted police at the scene and was released from custody “pending further inquiries”, a police spokeswoman said.
But the search began for a 32-year-old man who had been at the home at the time of the stabbing but fled before police arrived.
He was arrested just before 7pm on Monday at a fast food restaurant in Belmont and charged with murder.
He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.
