McDonald's introduces new coronavirus rule for staff

All McDonalds employees in NSW will now be required to wear face masks at work in the hope of preventing further spread of the coronavirus.

The fast food giant confirmed the mandatory policy to Yahoo News Australia on Wednesday.

“In accordance with the New South Wales Government’s recommendations and out of an abundance of caution, we are providing face masks to be worn by all employees at our New South Wales restaurants,” a McDonald’s Australia spokesperson said.

“The health and safety of our people and customers has always been our priority and McDonald’s remains committed to following the Government’s guidance.”

The spokesperson said employees will be issued three-ply surgical masks which are suitable to be worn in the kitchen and are in accordance with government standards.

“McDonald’s has established health and safety procedures for the use of masks in our restaurants and appropriate training will be provided to all employees,” the spokesperson said.

“All employees are required to wear gloves and serve our customers from behind plastic screens at the front counter and drive-thru window to prevent the potential for any direct contact.”

“Strict” social distancing procedures are still in place throughout McDonald’s restaurants at the front counter, at drive-thru windows and in the kitchen areas.

“Every day, in every shift, our employees are also following strict cleaning, sanitisation, quality control and hygiene procedures,” the spokesperson said.

Customers and employees are offered anti-microbial hand wash and hand sanitiser is available throughout restaurants.

Face masks are not compulsory in NSW, however the state does recommend wearing one if social distancing cannot be practised.
