Mum charged after 'stabbing her two children' on Adelaide freeway
A woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her two children, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Members of the public were forced into action when the female driver allegedly pulled over and began stabbing her boys, aged 3 and 8, on a motorway in Adelaide.
Police say the 35-year-old woman had stopped her silver Honda sedan on the North South Motorway overpass at Wingfield, north of the city, just before 11.30 on Monday night when the alleged attack took place.
A passing motorist reportedly stopped his car on the motorway before jumping to the rescue and disarming the woman.
Soon after other members of the public helped him by restraining the woman until emergency services arrived.
"If this man hadn't stopped I'm sure the situation would have been much worse," Superintendent Selena Dinning told media.
"We think he was very brave in doing this and we are really pleased that he was there, right spot, right time.
"We're also very grateful for the other two members of the public that assisted him in this."
Suffering critical injuries from multiple stab wounds, the two children were rushed to the Women’s & Children’s Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.
The eight-year-old has since undergone surgery, while his three-year-old brother, who is also now in a stable condition, will undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon.
Mother charged with attempted murder
Their mother was arrested following the incident and has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.
She remains in the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she has been detained.
"We don't know at this point in time where she was going or what she was doing," Supt Dinning said.
Detectives have launched an investigation into the attack and are calling on anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
