‘High risk’: Details revealed over airport worker’s Covid infection

An airport worker in Auckland has tested positive to Covid-19 on just the second day of the trans-Tasman bubble.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health confirmed the individual was now in isolation and the case would not be classified as a locally acquired case and instead a 'border case'.

Contact tracing and interviews in relation to the case are underway. It is unclear if the worker spent time in the community with a further update to be provided later on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the worker had been fully vaccinated and last received a Covid-19 test on Monday.

She said the worker had was working in a "high-risk" area cleaning planes from virus-hit countries.

Ms Ardern reminded people that those who are vaccinated can still get Covid-19 and that its main benefit is preventing serious illness or death. Further evidence is still needed to say whether the vaccine can reduce or prevent transmission.

Monday saw thousands cross the Tasman Sea and enter New Zealand after the long-awaited end of mandatory quarantine for Australian travellers.

Under the terms of the trans-Tasman bubble agreement, all states, territories and New Zealand can suspend quarantine-free travel with places that have outbreaks.
