Police officers shot at while trying to rescue baby in dumpster
Astonished police called to rescue an abandoned baby girl from a dumpster came under gunfire in a gang-ridden neighbourhood.
Officers in an armoured car were fired at almost immediately after entering the Brazilian suburb.
They fled when paramedics called and revealed the infant had already been rescued.
The newborn girl was taken to a nearby maternity hospital.
She underwent tests, received vaccinations and, at the time of reporting, remained in the hospital under observation.
Pictures show an armed-to-the-teeth SWAT cop toting an assault rifle as he stands beside the baby's cot.
When the girl is discharged, she will be handed to the local child services, officials said.
Police have launched an investigation and are trying to find whoever threw the baby in the rubbish and why.
At the time of reporting, the infant's mother had not been located.
The identities of the Good Samaritans who found the baby and called the emergency services were not reported.

They cleaned the newborn, whose umbilical cord was still attached, was rushed to a nearby hospital.
He is now in stable condition, but the identity of his parents remains unknown.
