Police respond to 'catastrophic scene' at hospital mass shooting

Four people and a gunman are dead, after a shooting at a hospital in Oklahoma in the US.

Police said on Wednesday afternoon (local time) authorities were called to St Francis Hospital in Tulsa following reports of a man armed with a rifle.

"This turned into an active shooter situation," police said in a statement on Facebook.

Police also said they were aware of multiple people with injuries. Initially, they reported three civilians were killed, however, they have since confirmed four were shot dead.

The gunman also died from what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police had moved through every room in the hospital to check for "additional threats". The shooting took place in the Natalie Building where there is an outpatient surgery and breast health centre.

Tulsa police Captain Richard Meulenberg said it was a "catastrophic scene", the ABC reported.

He said police had received a call about the man with a rifle on the second floor of the building on the medical campus.

By the time officers arrived on the scene, they found a few people had been shot.

"A couple were dead at that point," Capt Meulenberg said.

Tulsa Deputy Chief Eric Dalgleish said the gunman appeared to be aged between 35 and 40-years-old, NBC News reported.

It appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and he was also found with a handgun.

Aerial footage shows first responders wheeling someone out of the hospital building on a stretcher and dozens of police cars were out the front.

Family members and friends have been asked to go to a high school for reunification.

The shooting comes just over a week after 19 students and two teachers were killed in a school mass shooting in Texas. Earlier in May, a white supremacist killed 10 people at a supermarket in New York.

More to come.
