The identities of students killed in a school shooting in Texas have been confirmed by their heartbroken families as others continue the frantic search for their missing children.

So far, only a few children have been identified among the 19 students who were killed in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday (local time).

Xavier López, 10, was in the fourth grade at the school.

His cousin told local news station, KTRK-TV, his mother was at the school for an awards ceremony just hours before the gunman opened fire.

A GoFundMe set up to help Xavier's family has already raised over A$56,317.

Amerie Jo Garza was also killed in the shooting, her father Angel Garza told KTRK she had just celebrated her 10th birthday on May 10.

"She's been found. My little love is now flying high with the angels above," he said in a statement to the news station.

"Please don't take a second for granted. Hug your family. Tell them you love them. I love you Amerie Jo. Watch over your baby brother for me."

A family member of eight-year-old Uziyah Garcia confirmed he died in Tuesday's shooting, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

“The sweetest little boy that I’ve ever known," Uziyah's grandfather Manny Renfro said.

On Tuesday afternoon, father Brandon Elrod told KTRK-TV he feared his 10-year-old daughter Makenna Lee Elrod was dead, as they could not find her.

He was on his way to the funeral home.

"It's pretty sad what this world's coming to," he said.

Two teachers confirmed dead

Earlier a teacher at Robb Elementary School was confirmed dead, hours later her coworker was also identified as a victim.

Eva Mireles had been teaching for 17 years and a parent of one of her former students described her as a "beautiful person" and said she was a "dedicated teacher".

The family of Irma Garcia, Ms Mireles' co-teacher, confirmed she died early on Wednesday morning (local time).

Ms Mireles and Ms Garcia taught fourth grade and they had been co-teaching for five years.

A relative of Ms Garcia said on social media she "sacrificed herself" in order to protect the children, The Telegraph reported.

So far, 19 school children have been confirmed dead, along with two adults.

Families still wait for their children

Hours after the shooting, parents were desperate to know if their children were alright — two families waited for hours, not know what happened to their little girls.

After the tragedy, the school told parents that students were being transported to the Civic Center for reunification and said they would advise when they can pick their children up.

Annabelle Guadalupe Rodriguez and Elijah Cruz Torres, both 10, were both missing.

Annabelle's father told Fox News the family had not been in contact with her since the shooting.

One of Elijah's relatives said the family is "worried sick" and that she didn't want to go to school on Tuesday, but was told she had to.

Adolfo Cruz, Elijah's great-grandfather drove to the scene after receiving a tearful and terrifying call from his daughter shortly after the first reports that an 18-year-old gunman had opened fire at the school.

While he waited outside the school Tuesday night, his family was at the hospital and civic centre waiting for any potential word on her condition.

Çruz called the waiting the heaviest moment of his life.

“I hope she is alive,” Cruz said. “They are waiting for an update.”

There have been some reports that Elijah is among the deceased.

Parents inconsolable outside school

Footage from outside the school following the shooting shows parents who were clearly distressed, and potentially desperate for answers.

The heart-wrenching video was shared by an independent journalist on Twitter and in it, people can be heard crying and pleading with authorities.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was apparently killed by police officers responding to the scene.

Two officers were struck by gunfire, though the governor said their injuries were not serious.

Authorities said the suspect acted alone.
