Teen takes his own life after accidentally killing his mum

A 16-year-old boy is dead after he accidentally shot and killed his mother in what police have deemed a "tragic" incident.

On July 31, officers attached to the Del City Police Department in Oklahoma were called to a home following reports of a shooting.

The 16-year-old boy was found outside near the street when the police arrived at the scene after 11pm, with a gunshot wound to the head and a firearm next to him.

The unidentified boy was rushed to hospital, where he later died, KFOR reported.

Inside, police found 36-year-old Stephanie Rowshawne Jennings, the teenager's mother, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It’s tragic. It boils down to an accidental shooting,” Major Bradley Rule from the Del City Police Department said, according to KFOR.

The teen was reportedly playing with a gun when it accidentally fired.

“The bullet went through the wall separating the living room from the kitchen, and went all the way through the wall and struck his mother in the head, killing her.”

Maj Rule told People the boy ran to the kitchen after firing the fatal shot which struck his mother and saw what he had done and killed himself.

"I don't know if he was messing with it or playing with it," Maj Rule said, speaking of the teenager and the gun.

"He wasn't cleaning it. It was a firearm in the house."

Maj Rule told People at the time of the accident there was an eyewitness who was sitting in the living room and the evidence they provided lined up with the evidence at the scene.

Though the police believe it was an accident, detectives are still investigating.
